Celebrating International Nurses' Day at Grace Children's Hospital

International Nurses' Day is celebrated every year on May 12th, the anniversary of Florence Nightingale's birth. The International Nurses’ Day celebration provides a much needed break for the staff and allows them to celebrate their accomplishments. It’s a reminder that their work and contributions have not been forgotten as they are integral to the mission of Grace Children’s Hospital. The Nursing Education Committee on the GCH-ICC USA Board supports this event, every year. This year, the Chief Nursing Officer at GCH, Jocelyne Arnoux, and her nursing staff held a celebration during Nurses Week.

Every year, a theme for International Nurses’ Day is chosen by the International Council of Nurses (ICN), a federation of more than 130 national nursing associations around the world, including Haiti. The ICN represents over 28 million nurses working globally.

This year's theme was: Nos Infirmiers/Eres Notre Futur. Le pouvoir economique des soins. (Translation: Our Nurses. Our Future. The economic power of care. )

ICN President, Dr Pamela Cipriano explained the reasoning behind the chosen theme:

“Despite being the backbone of health care, nursing often faces financial constraints and societal undervaluation.

[. . . ]ICN has chosen to focus IND 2024 on the economic power of care with the aim to reshape perceptions and demonstrate how strategic investment in nursing can bring considerable economic and societal benefits".
