World AIDS Day 2024

By Jeannine Hatt

In 2000, a U.S. pediatrician visited Grace Children’s Hospital and observed the many children affected by HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus). This virus damages the immune system, leading to AIDS and leaving the body vulnerable to other infections and certain cancers.

Since its inception, Grace Children’s Hospital has built a strong reputation for diagnosing and treating tuberculosis (TB), with hundreds of children presenting symptoms such as cough, fever, and weight loss each month. Given the close connection between TB and HIV, many children were tested for both diseases. While TB could be treated, there was no available treatment for those who tested positive for HIV. Without access to HIV care in Haiti, these children either died in the hospital or were sent home to pass away with their families.

In 2003, a significant change occurred. Anti-retroviral medications, which had been available in the U.S. for over a decade, were finally introduced in Haiti. In partnership with the Haitian Ministry of Health, Grace Children’s Hospital took an active role in diagnosing, treating, and preventing HIV infection. Children were no longer sent home to die; instead, they regained their health and returned to their families. Parents began receiving treatment as well, and the number of 'AIDS orphans' started to decrease.

Today, Grace Children’s Hospital sees approximately 20-30 new HIV-positive patients each month. These patients receive education, are started on anti-retroviral treatment, and are closely monitored. As a result, a large majority eventually achieve an undetectable viral load, meaning they have a healthy immune system and can live normal lives without the debilitating effects of HIV. Pregnant women are also tested and closely monitored. If they are found to be HIV-positive, they are placed on a treatment protocol to prevent mother-to-child transmission.

On December 1st, we observe World AIDS Day to celebrate the progress made in combating this devastating disease. We also honor organizations like Grace Children’s Hospital and its staff for their dedication to protecting children and families from the tragedy of AIDS.
